The 2022 Monterey County Homeless Count and Survey was performed using HUD-recommended practices and using HUD’s PIT Count definition of homelessness. The 2022 Monterey County Homeless Count and Survey was conducted on January 27 & 28, 2022, and found a total of 2,047 persons experiencing homelessness during the 2022 count. The majority (66%) of individuals experiencing homelessness in Monterey County were unsheltered, sleeping on the streets, in abandoned buildings, vehicles, and encampment areas and in other places deemed unfit for human habitation. The remaining 34% of the population resided in shelters, either emergency shelters or transitional housing. Permanent supportive housing and rapid rehousing shelter data is not included in the PIT data reporting per HUD.
