We couldn’t accomplish the work we do without the generous support of our community. Whether you’re a former client, or your life has been touched in some way by substance abuse or mental health issues, or you’re just a concerned citizen, we need and welcome any contribution you can make to our cause.

CHS puts your money to work immediately to pay for general operating expenses that allow us to serve our clients — expenses like rent, utilities, salaries, benefits, food, medication, training — all the things that support our programs and make our services available to the low- and very low-income residents of Monterey County.

Vision

Community Human Services envisions a community where individuals and families have access to professional, affordable, and effective mental health and substance abuse services regardless of income.

We address the root causes of personal, family and community problems in order to create permanent and transformative change in the lives of our clients. We help them develop new skills and support networks, learn new behaviors, and learn how to access other community resources to meet their needs.

Ultimately, our services impact the community by reducing the need for social services, law enforcement, hospitals, jails and prisons, and improving academic and social outcomes for children.

Your dollars are extremely important in providing flexible, unrestricted support that ensures all the needs of our clients are met, and that our services meet the highest standards.

How your money is spent

CHS puts your money to work immediately to pay for general operating expenses that allow us to serve our clients — expenses like rent, utilities, salaries, benefits, food, medication, training — all the things that support our programs and make our services available to the low- and very low-income residents of Monterey County.

How well your money is spent

Many of our services are provided by licensed trainees and interns in the mental health or substance abuse field. They are supervised one-on-one at least once per week by a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist or Certified Addiction Counselor with a long history of service and high level of expertise.

In this way, CHS provides a double-benefit to the community. We help prepare mental health and substance abuse professionals for the field…in fact, we have one of the largest intern and trainee programs in the area and are an important resource for local colleges. Also, we are able to provide our services to more people at a lower cost, which means that your donation has the maximum impact possible on Monterey County residents.

Additionally, we work to collaborate whenever possible with other local agencies to avoid duplication of services and leverage funding sources.

Recent Accomplishments

At the urging of and with help from the Stanford Alumni Consulting Team, we created our first 5-Year Strategic Plan in 2011-12. As a result of thinking strategically and longer term, in the past four years we have been able to accomplish the following:

  • Enhanced and expanded services to veterans, gang-involved youth and prison re-entry clients, utilizing evidence-based best practices,
  • Vastly improved all of our facilities,
  • Implemented competitive market rate salaries for all of our employees,
  • Gained a new, 3-year CARF accreditation at the Family Service Centers and a 3-year reaccreditation at Off Main Clinic,
  • Redesigned our website to make it more informative and user-friendly,
  • Created an agency-wide outreach team to promote CHS in the community,
  • Increased contract, private contributions and fee for service revenue,
  • Secured funding for marketing and capital improvements, and
  • Made numerous upgrades to our technology systems.

During our 13/14 fiscal year, we served 2,644 individuals and provided 116,857 units of service (an hour of counseling, 1 bed day, etc.) to Monterey County residents.

The ultimate benefit of CHS’ programs often involves a complete change for the better in the life of a client – a profound transformation. Mental health and substance abuse issues typically affect relationships, finances, employment, living situations, physical health, mental and emotional health, and a person’s level of fulfillment and success in life. Although clients are often provided with food, clothing, shelter, and crisis intervention, our work goes deeper to address the very behaviors, thoughts, and attitudes that are at the root of so many individual and social problems, making the real long-term, accomplishments of our program immeasurable.
